TAMPA, Fla. (March 20, 2007) ? The University of South Florida softball team swept the Rhode Island Rams in a doubleheader, winning 5-0 and 10-1 at the USF Softball Field Tuesday night.
Courtney Mosch (5-2) was the game-one winner, pitching a complete-game shutout with six hits and six strikeouts. Kristen Gordon (9-3) tossed six innings in game two, allowing one run on four hits with eight Ks.
Five USF players had two-hits on the day and Ashley Bullion led all with a .667 average (2-for-3). Caitlin Schneider and Danielle Urbanik each recorded three RBIs in game two. Schneider's three RBIs is a personal best for the sophomore.
In the first game, USF scored five runs in two innings. In the second, Hillary Wolf and Britta Giddens each drove in a run off an RBI single. After URI (3-13) pitcher Jill Anderson added another on a wild pitch, Jessica Landau capped the inning with a fielder's choice RBI. Bullion drove in the last run of the game when she doubled in the third.
USF (26-14) started game two scoring five runs in the opening inning. Urbanik had a two-RBI double, while Caitlin Schneider drove in three runs on a two-out double.
In the fourth inning the Bulls took an 8-0 lead. Lauren Rodriguez led off with a single and scored on a Giddens RBI double. After Alison Savarese doubled in another run, Urbanik tallied her third RBI with a sacrifice fly.
After Rhode Island scored a run in the fifth inning, JoJo Medina ended the game in the sixth with a two-run homer due to the eight-run rule.
The Bulls return to action tomorrow when they welcome Princeton in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
