Some athletes, such as South Florida senior Jesus Verdejo, just want to play in front of a few select people ? their families.

When the Bulls travel to Puerto Rico for the San Juan Shootout, which will be played from Dec. 20-22, Verdejo will have the opportunity to play in front of his family for the first time in his collegiate basketball career."

? Phil Neary of The USF Oracle writes,"For four years, South Florida defender Yohance Marshall and his senior brethren on the men's soccer team dreamed of being crowned Big East champions."

? Greg Auman writes,"Grothe said Tuesday he's definitely coming back for his senior season, saying he won't even submit his name to the NFL's advisory board for underclassmen to get a better sense of when or if he'd be drafted."

? Auman writes in his Blog,"Big news for college baseball fans in Tampa, as the New York Yankees are finalizing a marquee event that would bring four of the state's top programs together for a doubleheader at George Steinbrenner Field (formerly Legends Field) in February 2010.

Florida and Florida State would meet in one game, with USF and Miami squaring off in the second at the Yankees' spring training home. The four schools would meet again in 2011, perhaps as part of a larger event."

? Auman also writes in his blog,"B.J. Daniels, who is playing the role of West Virginia quarterback Pat White on the scout team this week, will officially join Stan Heath's basketball team on Friday. He'll travel with the Bulls to Central Florida on Saturday but won't dress until the Dec. 14 game against Niagara at the earliest. His first practice will be Monday morning."

? Gary Shelton of the St. Petersburg Times writes,"It should have been more. You can say that about the Bulls' season, and you can say it about Saturday's game at West Virginia. There should have been more victories, more improvement and, as the final game of the regular season approaches, more at stake.

? Maria Burns Ortiz of ESPNSoccernet features Men's Soccer in her NCAA Soccer Notebook. She writes,"However, USF has little time to reflect on the accomplishment as the team turns its attention from preventing an upset to pulling one off. The Bulls travel to face reigning national champion Wake Forest (22-1-1) on Saturday. The Demon Deacons are coming off a 7-0 thrashing of Dartmouth.

? Tom Zebold of The Ledger writes,"Selvie might not be focused on the NFL right now, but he's surely curious. USF announced that head coach Jim Leavitt plans to help him with sending paperwork to the NFL Advisory Committee. A player does this to get an evaluation and grade from the committee before deciding whether he wants to declare himself eligible for the draft."

? Brett McMurphy writes that the Men's Soccer team has no worries going up to Wake Forest. He writes," University of South Florida men's soccer coach George Kiefer couldn't help but laugh the other day. Kiefer and his staff were discussing the Bulls' upcoming match at defending national champion and No. 1 seed Wake Forest (20-1-1) in the NCAA's Elite Eight on Saturday.

"They're good at everything," Kiefer said. "We were kind of laughing at that."

But being so good can have its drawbacks, and the eighth-seeded Bulls (15-4-3) are hoping to take advantage of that."
