TAMPA, Fla. ? University of South Florida men's soccer coach George Kiefer has added former MLS goalkeeper Adegboyega "Bo" Oshoniyi to the Bulls' coaching staff for the 2008 season.
Oshoniyi, who will primarily work with the USF goalkeepers, played collegiate soccer for Southern Connecticut State University from 1990-93, where he was a teammate of Coach Kiefer. Oshoniyi was also part of the U-17 National Team pre-World Cup staff that was coached by former USF head coach John Hackworth.
While at SCSU, Bo helped lead the Owls to two NCAA Division II National Championships and four-straight New England Collegiate Conference Championships. Oshoniyi was named the Final Four MVP twice, and in 1992 and 1993 he earned All-American status. In his senior season, he was honored with the Golden Boot Award, given to the nation's top collegiate goalkeeper.
After setting the collegiate shutout record at 50, Oshoniyi played professional soccer in the United States for 12 years, including stints with the Columbus Crew (1996) and Kansas City Wizards (2000-06) of Major League Soccer (MLS).
A U-23 National Team player, Oshoniyi's pro career began in 1994 when he trained with the Ajax of Amsterdam. A year later he played in the A-League with the New York Centaurs, then joined the Crew in Ohio. Following three more seasons and a trio of teams in the A-League - Connecticut Wolves, Charleston Battery, and Atlanta Silverbacks ? Oshoniyi signed with the Wizards.
In his first season in Kansas City, the team won the MLS Championship, as well as earning the Western Conference championship, a feat they acquired in the 2004 season as well. The two-time Western Conference finalists (2001, 2003) were the also the MLS Cup runners up and US Open Cup Champions in 2004. Oshoniyi, who was the first African American GK to start an MLS game, was honored as the U.S. Soccer Foundation "Humanitarian of the Year" in 2006.
The U.S. Olympic pool player holds a USSF National A license and was an assistant coach for the U-17 National Team, as well as a Region I Olympic Development evaluator.
A member of the World University Games team, he is the founder of the USA Goalkeeper Academy and has served in various coaching facets throughout the Midwest.
Oshoniyi has been a staff member for the Kansas City Wizards Soccer Camps along with the Soccer Plus GK Academy, Start GK Academy and No. 1 GK Academy.
He served as the Director of Coaching at Harrisonville Soccer Club and was an assistant coach for the University of Missouri-Kansas City men's soccer team. He has also been the head varsity girls coach at Saint Thomas Aquinas High (Mo.) and a boys varsity assistant at Shelton High (Conn.).
Oshoniyi is a 1994 graduate of SCSU, holding a B.S. in marketing, finance and communications.
Oshoniyi and his wife Tippi have a four-month old son, Xander.
