TAMPA, Fla. - The University of South Florida softball team fell, 5-1, to No. 13 Florida Sunday afternoon to close out the 2008 USF Wilson Tournament.
Senior pitcher Courtney Mosch (2-1) was credited with the loss as she allowed two runs, and three base on balls, while striking out one through three innings against the Gators.
"The one thing we have to get better on is our pitching staff,” USF head coach Ken Eriksen said. “We walked too many people and it bit us. Against a good team like that, you have to play flawless softball."
The Bulls lone run came when sophomore Cat Olnick loaded the bases on a single, scoring Tara Toscano.
Solid defensive stops kept the Gators scoreless through three innings as Mosch finished off the third getting junior Kristina Hilberth to strikeout swinging.
Early in the fourth, freshman newcomer Capri Catalano came out of the bullpen to relieve an ineffective Mosch.
After two consecutive runs from Florida batters, Catalano sent the Gators back to the field with strikeouts of Tiffany DeFelice and Corrie Brooks. The inning ended with the score 4-1 favoring the Gators.
Gators pitcher Stacey Nelson went back to the circle and would not allow a hit for the remainder of the game.
Head coach Ken Eriksen sent out sophomore pitcher Kristen Gordon in an attempt to keep the Bulls within four. After Gordon kept the Bulls within striking distance, Nelson got pinch hitter Kendall Arnold and Alison Savarase swinging to end the game.
"I saw a lot of positives out of the team this weekend,” Eriksen said. “That was the first tournament against some pretty good teams. I really like how the team is coming together and how we're solidifying our lineup."
The Bulls (3-2) return to the USF Softball Stadium when they host Mississippi as part of the USF Best Western Tournament. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16.
