Wilson Tourney Central | Box Score: USF 8, Bethune Cookman 0 (Run-Rule) | Bulls Win Two on Friday
TAMPA -- 2007 New Jersey Pitcher of the Year Capri Catalano started her first game in a Bulls uniform and gave the University of South Florida (3-0) its third consecutive win in an 8-0 run-rule victory over Bethune Cookman on Saturday afternoon.
Catalano was stellar as she did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. The lone hit came by BCC senior Holly Bussey that led off the fourth with a single to right field. The New Jersey freshman recorded her first strike out when Wildcat senior Christina Trimble swung and missed at Catalano's fastball to end the top of the first.
Catalano followed her first strikeout with two more to begin the second frame. The inning ended after a 4-3 putout by Schneider.
The Bulls were able to manufacture three runs in the second inning. BCC freshman pitcher Chastity Sanders began the frame by walking Alison Savarese. Aya Nakajima was the first of three Bulls to reach on field choices. Britta Giddens and Kit Dunbar each picked up an RBI helped USF establish an early 3-0 lead.
Catalano didn't miss a beat coming back to record her fourth strikeout of the game aided by an impressive defensive performance during the third inning and putting the Bulls back to bat.
Friday's star, Courtney Mosch, increased the Bulls lead to 4-0 in the third inning with a line drive double to center field that plated Caitlin Schneider, who reached on a single.
After Catalano gave up her lone hit of the game in the fourth inning, before being relieved by Kristen Gordon who finished the run-rule, five inning win, without allowing a hit in the fifth frame.
USF put the game away in the fourth inning when Giddens blasted a homerun to left field to lead off the inning. Following a Tara Toscano walk, Bethune-Cookman head coach Chris Cochran would pull Sanders for freshman pitcher Taryn Hernandez.
Hernandez would fare no better than Sanders as Savarese sent a single to left field and was able to advance to second on the throw bringing in Toscano to score the first of four runs in the inning. Nakajima finished the fourth innning rally and essentially the game with two RBI that pushed the advantage to 8-0.
USF will try to continue its perfect record at 4 p.m. against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles during game 10 of the USF Wilson Tournament.
