12-Hit Effort Not Enough Versus NMSU

dunbar_kit_battingTUCSON, Ariz.  ? A season-high 12 hits couldn't propel the University of South Florida softball team to a victory as New Mexico State's Stacey Lien hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh to give NMSU a 4-3 victory in day two at the Hillenbrand Invitational.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, senior Laura Wolf hit a screaming shot towards third base that deflected off the glove of Ashley Maroda scoring Kati O'Brian who was pitch running for senior Courtney Mosch to tie the game 3-3.

The Bulls recorded seven singles through the first four innings before Aya Nakajima, who led off the inning with a single to second, reached home plate on an Aggie error.

With Nakajima at second following Britta Giddens' sacrifice bunt, the senior outfielder capitalized off a shortstop error and rounded off two bases to light up the Bulls on the scoreboard.

The Aggie error allowed Tara Toscano to reach second; a Kit Dunbar single pushed Toscano to third and brought Mosch up to the plate. Mosch reached first on a fielder's choice that was meant to bring up the Bulls second out, but instead brought Toscano home to put the Bulls up 2-0.

NMSU replied with two singles and a run early in the fifth before Mosch was sent out to relieve junior pitcher Cristi Ecks. With two runners on base and one out, Mosch ended the inning with the Aggies up 3-2.

A third pitcher, sophomore Kristen Gordon, came into the circle to start the sixth inning. With pressure mounting, Gordon was able to retire four NMSU hitters and give way for the tying run at the top of the seventh.

Aggie catcher Stacey Lien destroyed Gordon's save attempt when she slammed a homerun to left field to end the game 4-3.

USF will conclude its participation in the Hillenbrand Invitational Sunday when it faces No. 24 Virginia Tech at 11 a.m. (EST).
