SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - After the dust settled on the two-day San Diego St. Invitational, the University of South Florida men's track team found themselves with 11 more BIG EAST Outdoor Championships qualifiers and three NCAA Regional qualifiers.
D'Andre Ruff ran an 11.04 100-meter-dash with Greg Fontus right behind with an 11.08 time. Both Ruff and Fontus earned a spot in the conference championships with these times.
The Bulls qualified three student-athletes for the BIG EAST Championships in the 200-meter-dash. Sophomore Josh Wimbley led the way by cutting the tape after just 20.98, and also reached the NCAA Regional qualifying mark with the time. Wimbley's time is a personal best and is the second-best 200m time in USF history.
Ruff (21.77) and Fontus (21.88) both are conference qualifiers in the 200m as well.
Wimbley will also compete in the BIG EAST Outdoors in the 400m after crossing the finish line in 48.36.
USF placed second and third in the 110m hurdles with solid times from Glenn Fowler (14.43) and Kendale McDaniel (14.79). The two add to the Bulls' conference meet participants.
Fowler's achievements for the day did not end there. In the 400m hurdles, Fowler finished the race in 51.53, a time fast enough to qualify for both the BIG EAST Championships and the NCAA Regionals.
With rain shortening last week's USF Open, it was the first chance for the men to compete in 2008 in the pole vault. Sean Young got his season off to a blazing start with a 5.15m (16'10.75”) vault that puts him second on the USF all-time chart. Young also cleared the bars that qualified him for the conference and regional meets.
The team will return home to host this Friday's Bulls Invitational at the USF track stadium.
