CLEARWATER, Fla. ? The University of South Florida softball team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 10 LSU as the Bulls fell short, 2-1, in extra innings at the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, sophomore JoJo Medina swung at the first pitch and knocked the ball out of the ballpark to put the Bulls up, 1-0.
USF threatened to score again in the top of the fifth when, with one out, senior Aya Nakajima and freshman Kelly McCarver hit a pair of infield singles. The next two batters, however, were unable to produce a run for the Bulls.
Senior pitcher Courtney Mosch held the Tigers scoreless for four innings before LSU's Jessica Mouse reached base on an infield error. Two batters later Tiffany Shaw, running for Mouse, scored the tying run for the Tigers.
Both teams engaged in a pitching battle through the next two innings before resorting to the international tie-breaker.
The Tigers ended the Bulls' hopes of an upset when two singles, both up the middle, advanced the second base runner past home base to score the winning run for LSU.
The Bulls dropped to 20-10 for the season, while No. 10 LSU improved to 24-4.
Mosch, 12-4, took the loss for the Bulls as she allowed six hits through the seven innings.
