Sophomore JoJo Medina's late seventh-inning homerun lifted the University of South Florida, 2-1, over St. John's in game one of the Bulls' BIG EAST double header opener at the USF Softball Field on Friday afternoon.

With a 1-1 tie at the bottom of the seventh and one out on the board, Medina took the plate and blasted a center field homerun out of the ballpark to give the Bulls the win.

Junior Cristi Ecks pitched the complete game against the Red Storm to improve to 6-3 for the season. Ecks struck out seven batters, while allowing three hits from 24 St. John's batters.

The Bulls scored first in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Alison Savarese that scored senior Kit Dunbar.

St. John's answered with a run at the top of the sixth when Shauntaine Harris led off with a double deep to left field. Harris stole third and advanced home on a passed ball to even out the score 1-1. Ecks struck out the last two batters to end the inning.

USF hitters registered eight hits in game one against the Red Storm. Medina finished game one 2-for-4, one run and an RBI. Dunbar went 2-for-4 and one scored run.

Going into the game, Medina was one of five BIG EAST players leading the league with four homeruns. The Bulls lead all conference teams with 14 homeruns in 2008.
