TAMPA ? The University of South Florida softball team split Friday night's doubleheader with No. 20/25 DePaul, 6-3 and 5-1, at the USF Softball Complex.
The Bulls, (37-14, 12-2) scored all five runs in the first inning of the nightcap to break Lauren Frankiewicz' eight-game win streak.
Tara Toscano and Kit Dunbar led off the inning with a pair of singles and advanced an extra base on a throwing error by Frankiewics.
Britta Giddens' triple to centerfield cleared the bases as the Bulls took a 2-0 lead with no outs on the board.
With JoJo Medina on first, catcher Cat Olnick knocked the ball out of the park to give USF a 5-0 lead. The home run was the second of the season for Olnick, both home runs have come against ranked opponents.
The Blue Demons avoided the shutout scoring one run in the top of the third.
Giddens went 2-for-3, with two RBI and scored one run. Toscano finished 2-for-3 and scored once.
Capri Catalano, this week's BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, extended her win streak in the circle to 12. The freshman pitcher threw the complete game, striking out five, while allowing four hits, one run, and giving up two walks.
DePaul fell to 31-13 overall, 8-4 in conference as USF remains ahead in the BIG EAST standings with a two-game lead.
Game One
The Blue Demons were on the winning side of game one as all runs were scored in the sixth frame.
Scoreless through five innings, DePaul took advantage of a pair of Bulls' errors to take a 6-0 lead.
USF countered with three runs when Giddens' double to left field scored Aya Nakajima and Toscano and cut the Blue Demons' lead to four. Two batters later, sophomore Brittany Villa sent a single down the left line to bring Giddens home.
Courtney Mosch took the loss in the circle, falling to 16-6 for the season.
The Bulls are back in action on Sunday as they take Notre Dame (37-13, 7-3) in a doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. Both games will be locally televised on Catch 47 starting at 11: 50 a.m.
