PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? On the edge of posting a six-game winning streak, the University of South Florida baseball team lost to Rutgers 5-4 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon in New Jersey. The Bulls took the first two games of the series, 7-5 and 6-4.

After freshman left hander Stephen Hunt loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, freshman Matt Stull came in to close the game. He forced a Rutgers batter to send a grounder to shortstop, but the Bulls were unable to make a play, allowing the Scarlet Knights to win their 14th game of the season.

Hunt, who drops to 0-2 this season, picked up the loss in the game, allowing two runs from three hits in 1.2 innings.

Freshman Ryan Lockwood collected a trio of singles in his first three at bats, extending his hit streak to 22 games. He now has seven three-hit games in his rookie year with the Bulls.

Junior Addison Maruszak also picked up a trio of base hits, a feat he has accomplished 10 times this year. Junior Chris Rey had a two-hit game, his 14th multiple-hit game of the year, while scoring one run.

In five innings, freshman starter Derrick Stultz allowed two runs from six hits and walking only one. Five consecutive Scarlet Knights went down swinging in the third and fourth innings, as Stultz dealt eight total Ks in the game.

On Sunday, USF hit the board first for the third consecutive time, tallying three runs in the second from five hits and a walk. Rutgers countered with one in the bottom of the frame, then both teams were held scoreless the next two innings. The Bulls picked up their fourth run in the fifth, then Rutgers crept back, tallying one in the fifth and another in the sixth. In the bottom of the ninth, Rutgers tied the game with a single, a batter getting hit by a pitch and a USF throwing error.

Rey led off the second with a single up the middle, then classmate Trey Manz sent a base hit past the pitcher. With one out, Koscso reached on a single, then scored after being moved to second on a hit from Maruszak, a passed ball and a wild pitch. Maruszak crossed the plate on a single from Lockwood, who picked up his 33rd RBI of the year on the play.

In the fifth Senior Joey Angelberger was hit by  a pitch, then Lockwood singled up the middle in time for junior Brian Hobbs to lay down a sac bunt and move the runners into scoring position. Designated hitter Stephen Hunt sent a long fly ball to left, which scored the Bulls' fourth and final run.

USF's BIG EAST series win over Rutgers was the Bulls' second of the year, the other being against Seton Hall, in the first league series of the season.

Following the three-game BIG EAST series in New Jersey, USF travels to Boca Raton, Fla., on April 22 to wrap up its six-game stretch on the road at Florida Atlantic. The Bulls and Owls battle at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, then USF returns to Tampa to host Stetson at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23. Fans can listen to both games on 1010 Sports as well as USF Press Pass Baseball Radio with Garrett Walvoord handling the call.
