QUEENS, N.Y. ? The University of South Florida baseball team lost a pair of BIG EAST Conference games to league-leading, No. 21 St. John's Saturday afternoon in New York.

After dropping Game One, 8-1, the Bulls led the Red Storm 3-1 in the top of the ninth of Game Two, but allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning and one in the 10th to lose their 12th BIG EAST game this season.

Freshman center fielder Ryan Lockwood continued his hitting streak with four hits in the two games against the Red Storm. He had a pair of singles in both games to extend the longest active hitting streak in college baseball to 30 games.

Game One
After two scoreless innings, St. John's scored one in the third then added six runs over the next four innings before USF broke up the shutout with one run in the eighth. The Red Storm tacked on one more in the bottom of the eighth to earn the 8-1 victory.

Lockwood collected his 14th two-hit game of the season while picking up an RBI and making six putouts in center field.

Junior Daniel Thomas was tagged with the loss, dropping his record to 2-3 after giving up six runs from nine hits in 5.1 innings. Freshman Kyle Eastham came in for relief, striking out three, but allowing two runs from a pair of his in 2.2 IP.

Lockwood connected on an infield single in the fourth inning to earn the Bulls' first hit of the game, but was one of eight USF baserunners left stranded in the game. USF threatened to score in the fifth as junior Brian Hobbs sent a one-out double to right center then sophomore Victor Pina drew a walk, but a strikeout - throwout ended the inning for the Bulls.

In the eighth, the Bulls put together three consecutive hits to score their only run of the game. Freshman Jonathan Koscso singled up the middle, then senior Joey Angelberger doubled to left field before a single to the right side by Lockwood plated Koscso. The RBI was Lockwood's 37th of the season.

Game Two
After trailing 1-0 for the first six innings, the Bulls tallied two in the seventh and one in the eighth to take the 3-1 lead going into the final half inning. St. John's scored two in the ninth, then hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 10th to sweep the double header.

Freshman starter Randy Fontanez pitched a gem of a game against the league-leading Red Storm. In 8.1 innings, Fontanez struck out three and allowed only two runs, tossing 120 pitches.

Junior Addison Maruszak and Hobbs each tallied two hits while Hobbs and junior Trey Manz both collected doubles in the game.

St. John's doubled in the second inning, then drew a walk and popped up a sac fly to left field to score the first run of the game.

Hobbs reached on an error to start the seventh, then with two outs, senior Charles Cleveland poked a shot down the left line to score the tying run. Manz followed with a double to right field to give USF the 2-1 lead.

In the eighth, junior Mike Consolmagno and Lockwood each registered singles then Hobbs doubled to right field to pick up his 31st RBI of the season.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Red Storm hit a double to right field off of Fontanez, then freshman Stephen Hunt came in and forced a sac fly to right, which moved the runner to third. Sophomore Shawn Sanford came in to close the game, but a HBP and a pair of singles to the outfield tied the game at three. Freshman Michael Anzivino relieved Sanford, forcing the Red Storm to fly out to center for the third out of the inning.

Maruszak started the 10th with a single up the middle, then Angelberger reached on a fielder's choice and Lockwood loaded the bases by drawing a walk, but the Bulls were unable to manufacture a run.

In the bottom of the 10th, a Red Storm player stepped to the plate and sent the first pitch over the left field fence to give St. John's the 4-3 extra-inning victory and extend their home record to 18-2 this season.

USF, who is now 25-24 overall and 10-12 in the conference, will face off against St. John's (39-10, 18-5), in the series finale at noon on Sunday.

Following the weekend in New York, the Bulls battle Florida at Gainesville on May 13 before closing out the regular season against Notre Dame May 15-17 at Red McEwen Field.
