QUEENS, N.Y. ? The University of South Florida baseball team tallied six runs in the top of the ninth to beat the No. 21 St. John's Red Storm 9-2 Sunday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

USF held a 3-2 lead going into the top of the ninth, then exploded for six runs on five hits to improve the team's record to 26-24 overall and 11-13 in the BIG EAST. With the win, USF dealt St. John's their third home loss of the season, dropping the Red Storm's home record to 19-3. USF also postponed St. John's from their 40th win of the season, and held the Red Storm from clinching the BIG EAST title. St. John's, who leads the BIG EAST, falls to 39-11 overall and 18-6 in the league.

Freshman right hander Derrick Stultz pitched USF's first complete game of the season, facing only seven batters over the minimum through his nine innings pitched. Stultz struck out six and had no walks, allowing only a pair of runs from eight hits.

"Pitchers Randy Fontanez and Derrick Stultz are the future of this program," said USF head coach Lelo Prado. "They both have a chance to be great players here as long as they stay focused."

Senior Charles Cleveland was 5-for-5 in the game, tying the school's record (with 25 other players on 30 occasions) for hits in a game. Cleveland sprayed five singles around the field, with a pair to the right side, one up the middle, one to deep center field and another to the right side.

Classmate Joey Angelberger had a double and a base hit to drive in three teammates, which increases his season total to a team-high 41 RBI.

Eight of USF's nine starting batters reached base in the game, whether by a hit, walk or after being hit by a pitch. The only player not to reach the basepaths was freshman Jonathan Koscso, who had a sac fly and a pair of sac bunts, tallying one RBI.

"Our offense did a good job when they needed to. It was a great outing but we should be miserable because we should be walking out of here with two wins.  We should be at the top of the conference but we have nobody to blame but ourselves. We didn't take care of business when we had to. We'll look back but the future looks very bright."

Only 13 batters stepped to the plate in the first two innings, as both starting pitchers picked up a pair of strikeouts. In the third, USF collected three hits and a HBP to score three runs, and St. John's scored one from a pair of doubles. USF held their two-run lead through the eighth inning, when St. John's picked up a run from back-to-back hits. The Bulls collected six in the top of the ninth to earn the 9-2 win.

To start USF's three-run third, junior catcher Trey Manz was hit by a pitch and was moved to third on a hit-and-run single to the right side from Cleveland. A sacrifice fly to center by Koscso scored USF's first run. With two outs, junior outfielder Mike Consolmagno doubled down the right line then Angelberger singled to left to pick up a pair of RBI and give USF the 3-0 lead.

Stultz faced five batters in the third, allowing a pair of doubles, which scored the Red Storm's first run. In the eighth, the Bulls gave up a double and a single, which scored St. John's final run of the game.

Cleveland led off the ninth with a single up the middle, and was moved around on a sac bunt from Koscso. Consolmagno drew a walk then Angelberger doubled down the left line to pick up his third RBI of the game. Maruszak was intentionally walked to load the bases, then freshman Stephen Hunt singled to the left side, driving in a pair of runs. After a St. John's second pitching change of the inning, junior Brian Hobbs was hit by a pitch, and pinch hitter Junior Carlin earned his third RBI of the year with a shot to second base. A single to the right side by Manz with two outs drove in two more runs, then Cleveland ended the hit parade with his fifth single of the game, a shot to center field.

Freshman Ryan Lockwood missed his third game of the season, putting his 30-game hitting streak on hold. Lockwood was out a pair of games last week with a groin injury and sat out today's game due to a sprained left hand.

Following the weekend in New York, the Bulls battle Florida at Gainesville on May 13 before closing out the regular season against Notre Dame May 15-17 at Red McEwen Field.
