TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - - On the second and final day of the 2008 NCAA East Regionals at the Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, the University of South Florida track and field team added another qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Junior pole vaulter Sean Young, coming off of a BIG EAST championship a couple weeks back, added to his fantastic season by placing in a tie for fourth at the Regionals to qualify for the National Championship in Des Moines, Iowa on June 11-14.
Young came out in the competition with his best effort by clearing his first two heights on the first try. The second height, 5.06m (16'7.25”), was good enough for a three-way tie for fourth.
However, with only five student-athletes from each Regional gaining qualifying spots in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the three went to a jump off where Young prevailed.
On the weekend, the Bulls have now tallied a total of four qualifiers, a large increase from last year where the team only garnered one.
Also in competition on the day for USF was senior Taylar Stallings in the women's shot put and sophomore Tyler Perkins in the men's discus throw.
Stallings, who qualified nationally yesterday in the discus throw, was unable to do so in a second event but had a solid showing with a best toss of 13.83m (45'4.5”).
The last Bull to compete in the meet was Perkins. He was unable to advance to the finals after a best throw of 48 meters, but still has two years of eligibility remaining and has his eye set on both the school record as well as a future trip to the NCAA Championships.
The four Bulls (Stallings, Young, Mikese Morse and Denise von Eynatten) will now prepare for the Outdoor Championships which will be coming up in less than two weeks.
