BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Jazmine Highsmith and Antillo Bastian each recorded first-place finishes as the USF track and field team opened its indoor season at the Indiana Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Highsmith led the Bulls to a strong showing in the throws events, capturing the weight throw crown with an 18.13m toss. Sophomore Lauren Noe also registered a 16.70m throw in the event ? good for a sixth place finish. Newcomer Atasha Warren added a seventh-place finish in the shot put (13.38m) while fellow freshman Marcus Hicks' 13.86m shot put placed him in ninth place in the men's competition.
Bastian finished first in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 15.52m. Nicholas Norman added a sixth-place finish in the long jump (6.19m) while Errol Blackmon and Michael Kursteiner added fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively, in the high jump. Samantha Shade and Alex Rosenberger represented USF in women's jump competitions. Shade finished third in the triple jump (11.73m) and took 13th place in the long jump (5.26m) while Rosenberger's 1.55m high jump was good for eighth place.
Veteran Sean Young chalked up a second-place finish in the pole vault at 5.12m (16-9.50) while freshman Kirk Dandrige finished ninth in the event at 4.52m (14-10.00). Dana Webb and Stephanie Duffy paced the Bulls in pole vault competition for the second meet this season both placing fifth at 3.65m (11-11.75).
Seniors Glenn Fowler and Yvana Hepburn both posted big results for USF in the 60-meter hurdles. Fowler's time of 8.06 was good for a second-place finish while Hepburn came in sixth at 8.69.
Freshman Shaniel Chambers helped lead the Bulls in distance competition, finishing fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.05 while veteran Pernilla Savestrand was USF's top finisher in the mile run at 5:06.68. Jen Wynands and Yasmin Smith posted seventh and eight place finishes, respectively, in the 3000-meter run, while the 4x800 relay team of Ashley Grigsby, Nicole Rosario, Chambers and Savestrand finished fourth (9:32.87).
Carlan Arthur was the top finisher for USF in men's distance competition, with a third-place finish in the 800-meter run (1:54.12) while Ryan Cortoy added a fifth-place finish in the mile with a time of 4:19.83. The Bulls also had a strong showing in the 4x400 meter relay with the team of Arthur, Fowler, Reshaw Exilien and Josh Wimbley placing third (3:19.02) and Kendale McDaniel, Mikail Ebanks, D'Andre Ruff and Gregory Fontus taking sixth place (3:22.95).
Fontus also led USF in the sprint competitions, capturing fifth place in the 200-meter dash (22.31) and finishing sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.03) while classmate Armante Marshall added a fifth place finish in the 60-meter with a time of 7.02.
The Bulls are off and running again next weekend traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the Red Simmons Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24.
