Head Coach Jose Fernandez
“When we talked to our team we said this was an important game. After tonight one of the teams was going to get three wins and you'd have five teams with three wins in the league. You've got Pittsburgh at 4-2, Notre Dame at 4-2, Louisville at 6-0 and Connecticut at 4-0, so it was a big game to put us in the top eight as far as standings in the league. I thought Georgetown played very well, they played without their big kid in Krystle Hatton. Defensively they played the 2-3 and the 3-2 on us, we got a lot of looks and we shot poorly, we shot very poorly. At the same time we got 25 offensive rebounds, I think that is 14 more than they did and we shot 29-percent from the field.
"A huge possession we told our team, we were down 18, 19 with I think it was ten minutes to go. We told them lets win the next few (media timeouts) and in four or five minutes it could be a four or five point game. We had it down to seven and then we had a break down in the back row of our press and then we came down and turned it over ? I thought those were two very big possessions with about 5:30 to go. What were we 7-37 from three-point range and 29 percent from the floor and Georgetown shot 59 percent. We didn't defend on the end, we gave up 11 points on out unders and on their five motion they beat us backdoor five times.
"If you put your head down in this league you're going to lose the next two or three games so we'll have tomorrow off, come back and get ready to get back to work. We have a week to get ready for Rutgers and then we have Marquette at home.”
On whether Georgetown was a must win
“No, I thought it was a big one, you're at home. I think this was a game you need to win at home. As far as the NCAA tournament Georgetown was a 52 RPI we're at a 49. To get to the NCAA tournament you need to get nine wins I think, 8-8, 9-7 I think gets you in but right now we need to think about Rutgers and the NCAA tournament is down the road. It would have helped our chances because we have some good RPI wins in our non-conference.”
On shooting 37 threes
“Those are shots that we make. Here is the thing too, we got the ball involved to (Jessica) Lawson but we're really struggling getting in gaps. Shantia Grace has been struggling getting by people, creating and so is (Jasmine Wynne) and (Janae) Stokes, that isn't her. I think they did a good job on Jasmine Wynne tonight when she came in. Out of those 37 we'd have to look at tape on how many of those were contested shots. A lot of them were on diagonal passes, a lot of them were on dribble kicks, a lot of them were in transition. We probably took 10 or 12 more than we wanted to take but it is a big part of our game and zones make you do that. At halftime we made some adjustments and wanted to get the ball a little more, screen the back of the zone and try to attack it from bottom up and get some more touches for Lawson and (Brittany) Denson, we have to get open looks.”
Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy
On the game
“I thought our kids came out and played extremely hard right from the jump. We jumped into our zone defense and we were active, we were moving and we pushed hard in transition.”
On USF shooting 37 three-pointers
“Most of the time when you see zone the first thing you think to do is shoot outside shots. We played a high percentage of the game in our zone defense and that helps.”
On Georgetown picking up its third BIG EAST victory
“It means a lot to us. As you know wins in the BIG EAST don't come easy. When you can come in and get a win on the road it is extremely important and good for the group because the wins don't come easy. People are winning, people are losing, it's the BIG EAST that's how it goes.”
On what she will remember most about Hall of Fame Coach Kay Yow
“Her dedication to the sport - I thought she gave extreme dedication to the sport, even when the cancer came and she went into remission she continued to come back and fight for the love of the game. We still hope that just as many people out there have the love of the game that she did.”
On Georgetown's game at N.C. State earlier this season
“That was actually the first game that (Kay Yow) missed. I think at that point they weren't quite sure because it was the first game, they were hoping she would come back, so it was right at the beginning of it.”
