TAMPA- Powered by the right arm of junior Kristen Gordon and the legs of freshman centerfielder Janine Richardson, the University of South Florida cruised to a 5-0 win over Eastern Michigan to open the 2009 USF “The Game” Tournament Friday afternoon at the USF Softball Field.
Gordon was nothing short of excellent in her five scoreless innings of work. Picking up her first win of the season, the Cocoa native allowed just one hit while striking out five and walking three.
Gordon would begin the six inning, but would get herself into a bit of trouble. After walking the first two batters Gordon was relieved by freshman Brittany Bowles. After EMU sacrificed the runs to second and third, Bowles, with a little help from her defense, would put an end to the Eagle threat. She struck out Jennie Sherman for the second out, then first basemen Ashley Bullion snared a hard grounder down then stepped on first for the final out of the inning.
The Bulls would offensively get going early and it would be Richardson who got the Bulls going. Richardson led the game off with a shot to the gap in right and legged out a stand up triple, the first of her career.
After a walk by Tara Toscano, JoJo Medina would give the Bulls a 1-0 by flaring a single to center to score Richardson from third.
In the second, the Bulls would give Gordon some room to work by putting up a three spot. With runners on first and second and one down and Richardson up to bat, Bulls head coach Ken Eriksen would put the runners in motion with a hit and run and it would work to perfection.
With a 0-1 count, Richardson slapped a grounder though the right side scoring both Kelly McCarver and Caitlin Schneider.
The Bulls would push another one across the plate when Medina would single to center to score Richardson for the second time this afternoon.
The Bulls would cap of the scoring in the third. With Laura Fountain standing on second, Bullion would cue a liner down the right field line to score Fountain from second to give the Bulls a 5-0 lead.
The Bulls, who improve to 5-2 on the season, was flawless in the field as the Bulls did not commit an error for the second consecutive game.
USF will take on Rhode Island in the night cap of a double dip on the opening day of the 2009 USF “The Game” Tournament. On day two of “The Game” tournament, the Bulls will take on Albany at 2 p.m.
