GAINESVILLE ? The University of South Florida softball team (11-5 overall) defeated the Texas Tech Lady Raiders (3-12), 15-9, in the first day of the Cox Communication Invitational hosted by the University of Florida.
Senior Britta Giddens and junior JoJo Medina each homered to lift the Bulls back from a 6-1 deficit and lead the team to its 11th win of the season.
In the first inning, the Raiders used three consecutive single to help mount a 2-0 advantage in the opening frame.
The Bulls did not answer with any offense in the first inning, but that would be the only inning the persistent USF offense would be held at bay.
The Lady Raiders loaded the bases again in the second inning with no outs. On a foul ball hit behind home plate, both first baseman Ashley Bullion and Cat Olnick chased the out. Unfortunately they left home plate unoccupied, allowing the runner from third to score. The Bulls were struck with more small ball as an infield single and sacrifice fly by Texas Tech would give them a 5-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the second.
A pair of walks to Cat Olnick and Ashley Bullion, plus a line single by Kendall Arnold loaded the bases for the Bulls. Freshman Janine Richardson roped a double down the left field line to bring home Olnick and Bullion and cut the deficit to 5-2 after two innings.
Britta Giddens led off the third inning with a solo home run to left field. Bullion would follow with an RBI double, Arnold lifted a sacrifice fly and Bullion would eventually come around to score on a throwing error to tie the game up at 6-6.
After consecutive walks by Tara Toscano and Richardson, JoJo Medina gave USF the lead for good in the fourth inning with her 15th career homerun. The three-run blast over the left field wall put USF ahead 9-6.
USF would save its best offense for the fifth inning when it scored five runs. Giddens (single), Media (walk), Olnick (two RBI sacrifice fly) and Bullion (double) all contributed RBI as the Bulls put the game out of reach at 14-7.
One more Giddens' RBI accounted for the Bulls final total of 15 runs. The senior second baseman was 3-for-4 on the day with three RBI. Medina led the team with four RBI on a 2-for-3 outing. Bullion and Richardson also earned a pair of RBI.
Another indication of how prolific the Bulls offense was on Friday afternoon, the squad tallied 10 walks and struck out just one time. Richardson led the team with three base on balls.
Senior Bree Spence (3-0) came into the game in the third inning and threw two scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Bulls will play their second game of the day when they the No. 2 Florida Gators at approximately 7:30 p.m.
