GAINESVILLE - After enduring a two-hour rain delay, the University of South Florida softball team (12-8 overall) fell to No. 2 University of Florida, 9-1, on Sunday afternoon in Gainesville.
“I think the one thing we learned today is that we need to compete,” said USF softball head coach Ken Eriksen. “We need to compete on every pitch, we need to compete for every single game. The commitment to hating to lose before the game starts is paramount to the success for the rest of our season.”
The Bulls were the first to get on the board, as junior Tara Toscano crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly from junior Ashley Bullion. The Bulls loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first after Richardson walked, a Gator error and a hit-by-pitch. Bullion then stepped to the plate, driving a ball to center, which allowed Toscano to put the Bulls ahead, 1-0.
The Gators would answer immediately in the top of the second scoring four runs on five hits en route to tallying the nine runs needed for a run-rule victory that was official after five innings.
Richardson, Toscano and freshman Laura Fountain each singled to account for USF's three hits in the game.
The Bulls finished the Cox Invitational, 2-3,with victories over Texas Tech and Pacific and two losses to the Gators and one to Illinois.
USF was the designated home team against Florida on Sunday.
The Bulls will face the Maine at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 3 in a doubleheader at the USF Softball Field.
