TAMPA ?The University of South Florida softball team defeated the University of Connecticut, 5-0, in the second game of a BIG EAST opening double header led by senior Cristi Ecks, who struck out eight.

“We tried to keep UConn off balance,” said USF softball head coach Ken Eriksen. “The tomato was getting ripe and need to get picked off the tree. Tonight was the culmination of hard work over the past 10 games.”

Ecks (3-1) tossed a complete shutout game striking out eight Huskie batters while not allowing a walk.

Junior right fielder Tara Toscano smacked three of the five Bulls hits in the second game. The Bulls scored all five of their runs on defensive miscues by the Huskies.

After the shortstop threw to second base where the right fielder was covering, an error allowed junior Alison Savarese to score from first and the speedy freshman Gina Kafalas to go home-to-home to put the first runs on the board in the third.

The Bulls would put two more runs on the board. Back-to-back singles from Toscano and Britta Giddens brought up junior JoJo Medina who singled up the middle to plate Toscano. Bullion would then single up the middle to drive in Giddens. Pinch runner, Becky Frye, would come home on a wild pitch to give the Bulls their final run of the game in the 5th inning.

“I was getting goose bumps right now that Cristi had no walks,” said Eriksen. “Fourteen innings of a team that is really offensive and shut them out says something about the caliber of our pitching staff.”

The Bulls (19-10 overall, 2-0 conference) will continue play on Friday, March 13 as they play host to their last tournament in the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater. The Bulls will face Loyola Marymount at 4 p.m. followed by #21 UMASS at 6 p.m. Bright House Sports network will be televising the Loyola Marymount game live from the Eddie C. Moore Complex on Friday.
