TAMPA ?The University of South Florida softball team defeated the University of Connecticut, 2-0, in the first BIG EAST game of the season.
“The girls have been working hard with extra batting practice and defense,” said USF softball head coach Ken Eriksen. “The pitchers have come in and focused on getting ahead and limiting the walks.”
The Bulls would get all they would need in the first inning as freshman Gina Kafalas would slide underneath the tag at home from a ball hit to the shortstop by freshman Janine Richardson.
USF would push the other run across in the third from back-to-back extra base hits from senior Britta Giddens and Richardson. Giddens hit a ball of the left field ball to put her in scoring position with two outs. Richardson would than triple down the left field line, recording her second RBI of the game.
“I was really focused this game,” said centerfielder Richardson. “I am trying to get on top of ball instead of popping the ball up and I think I did a good job of making those adjustments. I am so excited.”
Junior Kristen Gordon (4-3) shutout the Huskies tossing 7.0 innings while only allowing three hits and striking out eight.
The Bulls (18-10 overall, 1-0 BIG EAST) take the sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST going into the second game of the doubleheader.
