CLEARWATER - Opening the 2009 USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla, the University of South Florida softball began the weekend in grand fashion with a thrilling come from behind victory over Loyola Marymount, 8-7, in eight innings on senior second baseman Britta Giddens' walk off sacrifice fly which scored Lauren Rodriguez.
The Bulls would have to come from behind a few different times throughout the contest. The Bulls fell behind early as the Lions came out and put up a three spot in the top half of the first off Bulls starter Kristen Gordon on five consecutive singles. However, the Bulls would tie it up in the second frame with three runs of their own.
With runners on first and third with no outs thanks to a walk by Janine Richardson and JoJo Medina reaching on an error, Cat Olnick singled through the left side to score Richardson. After an Ashley Bullion sacrifice bunt, the Bulls had two runners in scoring position with one out and it would be freshman shortstop Laura Fountain who would deliver for the Bulls as she singled up the middle plating Olnick and Becky Frye who was pinch running for Medina tying the game in at 3-3.
The game would not remain tied for long as the Lions scored two in the top of the third to go up 5-3, but the Bulls would answer with another three run inning.
It would again be Olnick to deliver again for the Bulls. With Giddens and Medina on first and second, Olnick laced a singled up the middle to plate Giddens. The Bulls would take the lead when Medina and Olnick would score on a series of errors by the Loyola defense.
The Bulls would hold the lead until the fifth when Loyola took a 7-6 lead and hold it to the bottom of the seventh.
The Bulls would go station to station in the seventh to tie the game up. After back-to-back singles by Giddens and Richardson with one out, Medina would single to right field to score Giddens.
After the Bulls held the Lions scoreless in the eighth after they placed a runner on second due to tiebreaker rules, the Bulls would take advantage in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Kendall Arnold was placed on second with nobody out but was thrown out at third after an Alison Savarese bunt. Savarese would advance to second on a wild pitch and move to third with one out on a pinch hit single up the middle by senior Caitlin Schneider. Rodriguez came into the game for Savarese and would score on the Giddens sacrifice fly.
Senior Bree Spence (4-1) would come into the relief in the Loyola Marymount top of the fifth and would toss 3.1 innings giving up no runs on two hits. Spence would earn her fourth win of the year and 55 of her career.
The Bulls will face #21/14 University of Massachusetts immediately after the conclusion of the game.
