CLEARWATER - Sophomore Kendall Arnold's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning guided the University of South Florida softball team (23-11) to a comeback 2-1 victory.

Freshmen Gina Kafalas and Janine Richardson hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the seventh with one out. Arnold, who pinch hit for Tara Toscano, hit line drive single to left center to plate Kafalas for the winning run.

“I was feeling like I had to get a base hit,” said Arnold. “I was just trying to do something for my team.”

The Dolphins would put the first run on the board in the second after a one out double by Amanda Schmidt.

She would advance to third on a throwing error by the Bulls and would then score on an RBI single by Brie Carmack.

Senior Britta Giddens knocked her fourth homerun of the year over the left field wall in the fifth inning to even the score at one.

“After coming off last night, this is exactly what we needed to do,” said Giddens. “Once again I just tried to make contact and it went over the fence. Yes!!!”

Senior Bree Spence got the start and tossed 3.1 innings giving up one run and four hits. Junior Kristen Gordon (6-3) came into the game in the fourth to earn the win.

She hurled 3.2 innings of shutout ball, while allowing just one hit and striking out four Dolphin batters.

The Bulls offense tallied nine hits in the day. Giddens accounting for two of the hits.

The Bulls finished the USF Under Armour Showcase, 4-1, including an upset victory over #21/14 UMASS.

“I think the Jacksonville pitcher did a great job holding us down early,” said USF softball head coach Ken Eriksen. “We had the senior leadership step up in Bree and Britta. Kristen Gordon was just being Kristen Gordon and Kendall Arnold has been working really hard. Her (Arnold) philosophy is “I shall not let it pass” and she took advantage of that today.”
