TAMPA - The University of South Florida softball team (24-11 overall, 3-0 BIG EAST) defeated Rutgers in dominating fashion by way of a 7-3 rout in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulls fell behind early in the second inning on two unearned runs but rallied back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Junior catcher Cat Olnick led off the inning with a home run over the left field wall to cut the lead in half. JoJo Medina then singled up the middle followed by Alison Savarese with a single of her own to put two runners on with nobody out. Junior Ashley Bullion would move both runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.

"I saw the ball well tonight," said Olnick. "I know I have the confidence of the team behind me and that always helps."

An infield single by Kelly McCarver loaded the bases for pinch hitter Liz Howell who then drove in two with a sharply hit single up the middle.

The Bulls would add another run in the third with an RBI double of the bat of Britta Giddens which plated Tara Toscano.

Senior Cristi Ecks (4-1) would throw four complete innings and get the win, striking out three and no earned runs. Freshman Candace Howell would relieve Ecks and would strikeout the first five of the seven batters that she saw.

"The pitchers are doing a great job and I have such a great staff to work with," said Olnick. "They make my job as a catcher very easy."

The Bulls chalked another three runs on the board in the sixth to go ahead 7-2.

Olnick led off the inning with a double off the right centerfield wall to start the inning then after two errors committed by the scarlet Knights, pinch runner Becky Frye would cross home plate for the first run in the inning.

Freshman Gina Kafalas would hit a RBI single and fellow freshman Janine Richardson's RBI double accounted for the other two runs.

Senior Bree Spence came into the game in the top of the seventh and get her 11th career save to move her solely to third on the USF all-time career saves list.

Spence came in and fanned the final batter with the bases loaded to record the save.
