TAMPA ? It took one swing of JoJo Medina's bat to give the USF softball team all the offense they would need in defeating 2008 Women's College World Series participant Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon... but Medina and the Bulls didn't stop there.

Medina's three-run home run to deep left field put the Bulls ahead 3-1 in the first inning and catapulted the USF offense on to a 7-3 win on Friday afternoon in the Bull's opening game in the Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater.

Medina added her fourth RBI of the day on single in the third inning that plated Britta Giddens and increased the Bulls lead to 4-2.  The last time Medina had four RBI was against George Mason on March 11, 2008.

Giddens, who reached on singles in her first two at-bats of the day, jumped into the run-producing with a RBI double in the fourth inning.  She would finish the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

The secondary battle within the game was between Giddens and Medina, as well. The two USF sluggers are both tied with 16 RBI this season.  Giddens came into the game with 15 RBI and left the field tied with Medina after her huge afternoon.

The flood gates opened in the fifth and sixth innings as USF added another two runs on a Hokie error and a wild pitch.

The Bulls pitching was equally efficient in the opener.

Freshman Candace Howell threw 2.1 innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out a pair.  She was relieved by fellow freshman Brittany Bowles, who threw 3.2 innings, allowed one earned run  and gained the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.  Senior Cristi Ecks threw a scoreless seventh inning for USF.

There is no rest for the Bulls in tournament play, as they will immediately turn around and play Fordham at approximately 7 p.m.  Fordham defeated Lehigh, 7-6 in eight innings, earlier today.

The Bulls will face Lehigh on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern in their final pool play game.  After the completion of pool play, the team's will be seeded for tournament play to determine the champion of the 2009 UA Invite.
