TAMPA ? The University of South Florida softball team (15-10) fell to Lehigh, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon, but still advanced as the top team from Pool A and will meet NC State in the USF Under Armour Invitational championship bracket at 4 p.m.
The Bulls came into the game against Lehigh undefeated in tourney play at 2-0 with wins over Virginia Tech and Fordham. On the other end of the four-team championship bracket are Loyola Chicago and Villanova, who will meet at 6 p.m. If USF wins against NC State, they will face the winner of ULC and Villanova on Sunday morning (time TBA).
The Bulls could only mustered three hits against Lehigh starting pitcher Lisa Sweeney, who threw a complete game shutout and recorded eight strikeouts.
The hits were spread out over three batters ? Kelly McCarver, Allison Savarese and JoJo Medina ? and three innings ? the third, sixth and seventh.
The Bulls failed to capitalize on a key scoring opportunity in the sixth inning when Savarese led off with a triple, but was stranded after a pair of strikeouts and a ground out.
Lisa Sweeney put the game away on the mound and at the plate. Her RBI triple in the fourth inning gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Sweeney was 3-for-4 on the day.
The second run of the game was driven in by a Jennifer Colquhoun RBI double in the seventh inning.
Bree Spence suffered her first loss of the season and fell to 3-1 overall. She worked six innings, allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out nine. She was relieved by Cristi Ecks, who allowed one hit in the final frame.
