QUEENS, N.Y. ? Two home runs by JoJo Medina lifted the Bulls past St. John's, 7-2, in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday. The defending BIG EAST Regular Season Champion USF softball team improves to 29-18 overall, and 8-7 in the BIG EAST conference.
Senior Britta Giddens roped a ball over the left field fence in the first inning to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. Medina followed with a solo shot to the same spot over the left field wall to double the Bulls lead, 2-0.
The Bulls would rally in the fourth as Giddens led off with a single through the left side. The bases would become loaded after a Cat Olnick single and an intentional walk to Medina. Freshman Laura Fountain singled to right field to bring home the first run of the inning. The Bulls scored the second run of the inning on fielder's choice to the third baseman.
The Bulls added another run in the sixth on a Red Storm miscue to take a 5-1 lead. After St. John's cut the lead to three in the sixth, Medina roped her second home run of the game down the left field line. Junior Ashley Bullion followed with a triple off the right field fence to put herself in scoring position. Bullion scored on the fourth St. John's error of the day.
Junior Kristen Gordon (7-4) pitched 5.2 innings, striking out six for the win. Linzee Sumrall (10-10) suffered the loss, tossing all seven innings.
Freshman Brittany Bowles earned her first career save, throwing 1.1 innings.
