SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. ? Despite collecting 11 hits in the ball game, the University of South Florida softball team (29-20 overall, 8-9 BIG EAST) fell 11-7 to the Seton Hall Pirates in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Bulls took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning on an Ashley Bullion two out bases loaded double down the right field line to plate freshman Janine Richardson and junior Tara Toscano.
In the third inning, the Bulls extended their lead to 3-0 on a deep sac fly by JoJo Medina allowing Toscano for the second time.
Seton Hall responded in the bottom of the inning scoring eight in the bottom of the inning. The Pirates used back-to-back home runs as they pushed their lead to 8-3.
In the fourth inning, USF cut the Seton Hall to 8-6 by pushing across three runs in the inning.
Junior Alison Savarese led off the inning with a single to left field. Sophomore Kelly McCarver than slapped a doubled for the second time of her career to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Savarese scored on a wild pitch, while McCarver crossed home on a RBI single by senior Britta Giddens. Catcher Cat Olnick singled to left to allow Richardson score from third, the third run of the inning.
Seton Hall answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to put them ahead by four runs, 10-6.
The Bulls could only muster one more run as Olnick doubled to left center to plate Giddens in the sixth.
Freshman Brittany Bowles (6-5) received the loss tossing 2.1 innings giving up seven runs on five hits. Junior Kristen Gordon, pitched 1.1 innings in relief and freshman Candace Howell innings of 2.1 relief. Howell held the Pirates to one run and three hits.
