TAMPA ? The University of South Florida softball team (32-20 overall, 11-9 BIG EAST) completed a sweep of the Providence Friars (14- 31 overall, 6-11 BIG EAST) with a 5-4 win in game two of a Friday afternoon doubleheader and clinched a spot in the BIG EAST conference tournament.
"You have to give the girls alot of credit today," said USF head coach Ken Eriksen. "For our team to get two wins in a must win situation and to get five runs in the bottom of the seventh to come back and win, it shows all of their hard work since Aug. 25."
The Bulls rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the dramatic come-from-behind win. Senior Caitlin Schneider played hero on Senior Day with the game winning RBI single.
"I walked in the box and I knew she was not going to get it pass me," said Schneider. "My team did a great job coming back with bases loaded and one out. I knew I had to step up and just hit the ball really hard."
Going into the bottom of the seventh, the Bulls trailed by four runs and would use seven hits to overcome the deficit.
Freshman Gina Kafalas led off the inning with a single to left field. Singles by junior Tara Toscano and senior Britta Giddens loaded the bases for pinch hitter Kendall Arnold.
Arnold sent a shot to left center that cut the Friars lead by two.
Junior JoJo Medina followed with an RBI single to right field that continued the Bulls rally and inched them closer at 4-3.
Junior Ashley Bullion followed with a RBI single of her own to plate Giddens and tie the game at four.
Alison Savarese walked loaded the bases for Schneider, who hit the game winner in the final home game of her career.
"I think all the hard work that Caitlin Schneider has been doing, paid off tremenously," said Eriksen.
Toscano and Giddens led the team with two hits each.
Senior Bree Spence (5-4) earned the victory tossing one inning, not allowing a run. Senior Cristi Ecks started and tossed five innings, striking out six.
Liz Howell, Schneider, Spence, Ecks and Giddens were honored at the conclusion of the game for their hard work and dedication to the USF softball program.
USF will complete BIG EAST play against Pittsburgh on May 3. First pitch is set for Noon in Pittsburgh, Pa.
