CLEARWATER, Fla. - Freshman pitcher
Lindsey Richardson proved she will be a force to watch out for as the years go on, as the rookie shut down Canisius, 6-1, in her first collegiate start for the University of South Florida softball team Sunday evening.
"Just bouncing get a W after two losses in a row was huge," USF coach
Ken Eriksen said. "For (Lindsey) to come out and take command of that game in the first inning set a tone for our team. As a freshman, it's bigger than you can imagine."
The Bulls rebounded in the second game of a doubleheader that concluded the Wilson-DeMarini Tournament at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The win put USF at 2-2 overall in the first weekend of the season. Canisius suffered its fourth loss in a row to start its 2010 campaign.
Richardson picked up the win by going all seven innings, allowing seven hits and just one earned run. More impressively, Richardson struck out 11 Canisius batters without giving up a walk.
"I had a whole bunch of pitches working for me. I had my defense working for me and I really appreciate that," said Richardson "All in all, a good day."
Senior
Alison Savarese went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, including a solo home run in the fifth inning, her second of the day. Freshman
Melanie Stickney, in her first collegiate at bat, doubled home two runs for the Bulls in the seventh.
Amanda Baun fell to 0-2 on the season for Canisius, giving up six runs, five earned, in all seven innings of play. Baun dug herself into holes by giving up eight walks with just three strikeouts.
Freshman Stormi Gryzbek got the Bulls on the board in the first inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk following back-to-back singles by senior first baseman
JoJo Medina and Savarese and a walk to senior catcher
Cat Olnick. Sophomore
Alexis Nowell struck out in the next at bat as USF stranded three runners on base.
Sophomore outfielder
Gina Kafalas reached on an infielder's choice in the second inning, then raced to third on a wild pitch by Baun before scoring on a sac fly by sophomore
Janine Richardson for the 2-0 lead.
The Griffins put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the second, but Savarese made a great snag on a hit by Ulmer and threw out the Canisius batter at first to end the inning.
USF put two runners on with one out in the third for another scoring opportunity, but Gryzbek was called out on the infield fly rule, and Nowell's check swing hit went right to Baun, who threw her out for the final out of the inning.
Canisius had a great opportunity to score again in the bottom of the fourth, as Fridey doubled off the glove of Kafalas in right as the leadoff batter for the Griffins. Richardson, though, got Freiberger to pop out to
Janine Richardson in center before striking out the next two batters to end the threat.
Savarese gave USF an insurance run with a blast to left center with two outs in the fifth, as Lizzy Gatto, at first glance, appeared to make the catch out in center for Canisius - even fooling some of the fans - but came up just short of the catch.
Michelle Fridey tripled to right center with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for Canisius' best chance to score, but Richardson stayed calm and got Freiberger to ground out to end the inning.
USF scored three more in the seventh inning to cap the Bulls' scoring, as Savarese drew a walk and senior
Melissa Rosas smoked a single to center to put runners on first and second. Nowell singled through third and short to bring in Savarese, and Stickney doubled to left center to plate Nowell and Rosas before getting thrown out at third on the play.
Canisius later broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh when Kerry Ulmer singled home Gatto.
USF will be back in action Friday at the USF Softball Stadium as the Bulls host the USF La Quinta Inn and Suites Tournament Friday through Sunday. Play gets underway at 9 a.m., with the Bulls facing Wright State later in the day at 1:30 in the afternoon.
