TAMPA - The University of South Florida (15-15) defeated the Cornell Big Red, 4-1, behind the arm of freshman Lindsey Richardson and a big third inning by the Bulls offense.
Richardson improves to 6-3 on year, while tossing 6.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits. The righty struck out six Cornell batters in her showing.
Senior Kristen Gordon entered the game in the seventh and earned her eighth save of her career tying her for sixth all-time with former All-American Leigh Ann Ellis.
The Big Red (9-6) struck first after Alyson Intihar doubled to right center plating Ali Tomlinson, who reached on a leadoff walk in the top of the third.
In the home half of the third, the Bulls immediately answered, scoring all their runs on four hits.
Sophomore Alexis Nowell was the Bulls first base runner of the game, after getting hit by a pitch. Junior Kelly McCarver singled to left field, for one of her two hits in the game. Sophomore Gina Kafalas loaded the bases with a single up the middle before senior Tara Toscano stepped up and hit a clutch single to right center, scoring the Bulls first two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
With runners on first and second, senior Alison Savarese roped a single to center, scoring Toscano. Medina got hit in the left shoulder for the 27th time of her career, now three shy of the record of 30, held by Sarah Watson. A wild pitch by Cornells' Elizabeth Dalrymple brought across the Bulls' fourth run of the inning.
Gordon finished the game hurling 0.2 innings, striking out one and not allowing a run or walk.
Dalrymple only suffered her second loss of the season, going 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and walking two. She also hit three Bull batters in her appearance.
