CLEARWATER, Fla. – The University of South Florida softball team (7-7) fell to the Penn State Nittany Lions, 4-2, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon in the Under Armour Invitational.
Sophomore Gina Kafalas tallied two of the Bulls four hits in the game to lead USF.
In the bottom of the first, USF was first to record a hit in the game. Kafalas lined a double down the left field line to start the bottom half of the inning. Penn State (12-6) retired the next three Bull batters to end the threat.
Kafalas reached first after being hit by a pitch in the third with two outs. Two pitches later she stole second, but was thrown out at third in her attempt for her second straight steal.
Senior righty Kristen Gordon had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning until centerfielder Cassidy Bell broke it up with a single up the middle. After another single by Penn State, Coach Eriksen brought in Lindsey Richardson to work out of the jam. The freshman worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game locked 0-0 in the sixth.
Gordon tossed 5.1 innings giving up two hits and striking out four, but was given the no-decision.
With only one hit for the Bulls going into the sixth, Kafalas dropped down a bunt to get her second hit of the game. Kafalas then stole second for her second one of the day. Senior Tara Toscano moved Kafalas into prime scoring position for RBI leader Alison Savarese. A grounder to the shortstop put the first run on the board for the Bulls. Savarese posted her 19th RBI on the year.
In the last opportunity for Penn State, the Nittany Lions hit an RBI double to right center to even the score at 1-1.
Both teams started out with a runner on second base to begin the seventh, eighth and ninth inning but neither team was successful scoring until the 10th inning.
Redshirt sophomore Capri Catalano relieved Richardson in the eighth inning, hurling 3.0 innings, but was defeated in the 10th.
Danielle Noll started on second for Penn State in the 10th. Alyssa Renswick placed a bunt down to touch first safely and advanced to second, where nobody was covering for the Bulls to put runners on second and third with nobody out. After an intentional walk, Ashley Griffith hit a single to left center, plating two runs for Penn State. With bases loaded and one out, a sac fly by the Nittany Lions extended the lead 4-1.
In the 10th, the Bulls cut the lead to two when Olnick scored on an error by Penn State, but that was the end of USF's rally.
Catalano got her first loss of the year, striking out three and giving up three runs, two earned.
