TAMPA - The University of South Florida softball team opened up BIG EAST play in dominating fashion as the Bulls shut out the Seton Hall Pirates 7-0 Friday afternoon.
Freshman Lindsey Richardson tossed her first complete game shutout of her career. She hurled 7.0 innings, scattering five hits while only walking one batter. More impressively, Richardson did not allow an extra base hit in her showing.
In the home half of the fourth inning, the Bulls threatened with the bases loaded. Sophomore Gina Kafalas and senior Tara Toscano recorded back-to-back singles with one out. After an intentional walk to the Bulls home run leader Alison Savarese, the Pirates tracked down a fly ball to deep right center on a Cat Olnick hit to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
The Bulls were ruthless to the Pirate pitching, scoring four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. After freshman Stormi Grzybek singled and pinch hitter Melissa Rosas walked, Kafalas singled through the right side to load the bases.
Toscano slapped the ball to second base but easily reached first as no one was covering, allowing pinch runner Becky Frye to easily touch home for the Bulls first run. Junior Kendall Arnold was clutch as she sent a triple with the bases loaded off the right-center wall to give the Bulls a 4-0 lead.
"We came up with some timely stuff today," said head coach Ken Eriksen. "Kendall (Arnold) came into the game and swung the bat aggressively."
USF extended its lead, scoring three runs in the sixth. The Bulls loaded the bases with three straight walks. Frye earned a four-pitch walk with one out, followed by Alexis Nowell fighting back to earn a walk on a full count. After Frye and Nowell advanced one base on a wild pitch, sophomore pinch hitter Laura Fountain also earned a walk, one of the Bulls six walks in the game.
After the Pirates made their second pitching change of the inning, Brook Tull walked sophomore Janine Richardson on four straight pitches to make it 5-0. A throwing error on the Pirates added two more runs for the 7-0 lead for the Bulls.
Kafalas led the Bulls at the plate leading all batters with three hits, while seven different Bulls scored in the win.
Ashley Forsyth (4-6) suffered the loss giving up four runs, all earned, while walking two and allowing seven hits. Relievers Hannah Hill and Tull combined for three runs and four walks, but did not allow a hit.
Tomorrow all softball alumni will be able to watch the USF softball team for the last time at the USF Softball Stadium this season for the 2010 Alumni Reunion.
