TAMPA -- Carlton Mitchell became the second-ever wide receiver for the University of South Florida to be selected in the NFL Draft when he was taken by the Cleveland Browns in the sixth round with the 177th overall pick.

Mitchell joins former standout DeAndrew Rubin, who was taken in the seventh round by the Green Bay Packers in 2003. He also was the fourth offensive player for USF ever taken in the Draft along with Rubin, tackle Kenyatta Jones and kicker Bill Gramatica.

The former Bull can look forward to catching passes from former Texas quarterback and the winningest college football player of all-time Colt McCoy, who was drafted earlier by the Browns. He is also the second USF Bull to be selected by the Browns, following Anthony Henry who was picked by the Browns in 2001. Henry currently plays for the Detroit Lions.

Mitchell has a chance to come in right away and make an impact with the Browns, joining a young wide receiver corps that includes Josh Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi along with Jake Allen, Brian Robiskie, Syndric Steptoe and Chanci Stuckey. Cribbs is the only player with more than four years of experience of the group.

In addition, Mitchell was the fourth Bull selected this year, joining first-rounder Jason Pierre-Paul, second-round selection Nate Allen and Jerome Murphy, who was picked at the beginning of the third round. The four draft picks marks the most USF has ever had in one year, breaking the previous record of three set in 2001 and 2003. It is also the most by any BIG EAST school so far.

In his three seasons with the Bulls, Mitchell stood out as the best receiver ever to wear the Green and Gold.  Adept at making the big play at USF, Mitchell had eight catches for 50 or more yards in his career, tops all-time in the program, and his 85-yard touchdown reception at Syracuse on Oct. 3 stands as the second-longest reception ever in 13 years of Bulls football.

The Lutz, Fla., native earned a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll and was named the CollegeFootballPerformance.com Honorable Mention Wide Receiver of the Week after grabbing six receptions for 139 yards and two TDs against the Orange, posting the fifth-most yards in a game in USF history.

He ranks first all-time at USF in career receiving yards with 1,648, needing 32 less receptions than the previous record holder, Hugh Smith, to set the mark. Mitchell also owns the most receiving yards in a season with 706. He stands fifth all-time in career receptions with 105 and owns the most 100-yard receiving games with five.

For his career, Mitchell totaled 105 receptions for 1,648 yards, an average of 15.7 yards per catch, along with nine touchdowns. His best season came in 2009, when he posted 40 catches for 706 yards, ranking fourth all-time at USF with an average of 17.6 yards per catch. Mitchell tied for the team lead with four TD receptions.
