VILLANOVA, Pa. - The University of South Florida softball team continued its struggles as the Bulls fell to the Villanova Wildcats, 6-1, in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Once again the Wildcats scored in the first inning, giving them an early lead.
Senior JoJo Medina stepped to the plate in the second inning, singling to center for her fourth straight hit against the Wildcats dating back to Game 1. Sophomore Laura Fountain hit a single to put runners on first and second but the Bulls offense failed to bring in a run.
Villanova poured on four more runs in the third to extend its lead, 5-0.
Redshirt sophomore Capri Catalano (2-4) started and lasted only 2.1 innings, earning the loss. The New Brunskwick, N.J., native allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits.
Senior Kristen Gordon entered the game in relief but only tossed 0.1 innings, allowing one run.
Villanova added another run in the fifth, giving the Wildcats a six-run lead heading into the sixth.
Although, sophomore Janine Richardson ended her hit-streak in Game 1, the centerfielder kept another streak alive, reaching base for the 11th straight game after getting hit by a pitch to start the sixth. Senior Alison Savarese then lined a single though the left side of the infield with nobody out.
Freshman Stormi Grzybek, who doubled off the left field fence in the fourth, earned a walk to load the bases. Sophomore Laura Fountain ripped a single through the left side, scoring Richardson from third and giving the Bulls their first run of the game.
Fountain recorded her second multi-hit game in a row.
Caitlin Delahaba (9-17) earned the win for Villanova, hurling 7.0 innings, walking three and striking out seven.
