PITTSBURGH -- Sam Mende's three-run homer in the top of the 10th powered the the University of South Florida baseball team to a 14-12 come-from-behind win over Pitt Friday night at Trees Field.
Not to be forgotten with Mende's late-inning heroics, Daniel Rockhold drove in seven runs on the night highlighted by a game-tying three-run homer of his own in the seventh inning.
The Bulls jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after the first two frames by plating three runs each. The 6-0 lead didn't last long as Pittsburgh answered with three runs in the bottom half of the second and six in the third off of Bulls' starter Matt Reed and reliever Kyle Eastham.
Reliever Jimmy Moran was huge for the Bulls holding the Panthers to two hits over three innings of work to keep the Panther advantage at 9-6.
After Rockhold's homer in the seventh, Pitt answered with a two-run bomb by David Chester to give them a two run cushion in the eighth.
Rockhold's homer was the third hit of the night for the sophomore. The Bulls No. 3, 4, 5 hitters Koscso, Mende, Rockhold and went a combined 9-for-13 on the night with 12 RBI and nine runs scored. Each collected three hits.
The Bulls would answer as Andrew Longley sent a drive deep into the night to even up the game at 11 all.
Quackenbush (2-4) picked up the win as he worked 4.0 innings striking out a career high eight batters. He yielded three runs on two hits with just one being earned.
The Bulls will return to Tampa and make the short trip to Clearwater for the BIG EAST Championships with games beginning Wednesday, May 26 at Bright House Network Field.
The Bulls will head into the tournament as the fifth seed and will face St. John's in the first round. They willl begin the tournament Wednesday against the fourth-seeded Red Storm.
Game Notes:
In the three game series, the Bulls hit seven home runs... Rockhold's seven RBI were two off the school record of nine... The series win on the road is the first since taking two of three from Cincinnati on Easter weekend... The win is the first extra inning win of the season for the Bulls.
