WASHINGTON D.C. - The University of South Florida softball team (24-28 overall, 9-12 BIG EAST) roped two home runs to take Game 2 over the Georgetown Hoyas for the 5-0 win in Saturday's doubleheader. The win, however, still does not guarantee a spot in the BIG EAST Conference tournament.

"Now is the time for big-time hitters to do big-time things in big-time situations," said head coach Ken Eriksen. "The seniors that you are leaning on, Cat Olnick, Alison Savarese, Tara Toscano, did great things today."

Sophomore Janine Richardson reached base on a walk to begin the game for the Bulls. Sophomore Gina Kafalas followed with a single and senior JoJo Medina reached first on a dropped third strike to load the bases.

For the second game in a row the Bulls were first on the board as senior Cat Olnick hit an RBI single through the left side, driving in Kafalas to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead in the first. Olnick was previously 1-for-8 with bases loaded.

"It was nice to put a couple of knots on the board in the first inning," said Eriksen.

Olnick was not done at the plate as she sent her second homer of the season over the left field fence in the third for her third RBI of the game. Kafalas was on first for one of three hits in the game when Olnick drove her in.

"I was just really relaxed today," said Olnick. "I wasn't thinking about it too much and just went out there to play."

Senior Alison Savarese snapped a 25-game home run drought as she sent a two-run dinger over the centerfield fence in the fifth inning. Savarese leads the Bulls with eight homers on the season. The Bulls are now 3-0 when hitting two or more home runs in a game.

"I have been struggling just getting the bat head to the ball," said Savarese. "My body has been really quick, so Ken told me to slow down and get back to basics and hit singles and it just came."

Redshirt sophomore Capri Catalano cruised as she threw a solid 5.0 innings, only allowing a hit and striking out two.

The BIG EAST leader in games in relief, Kristen Gordon entered the game and held the Hoyas to one hit in 2.0 innings of work. The Cocoa, Fla., native struck out four of the seven batters she faced.

"I can't say enough about our pitching staff in the second game," said Eriksen. "We only faced one batter over the limit. It was nice to see Catalano and Gordon come around. The pitchers gave our hitters the opportunity to win the ball game."

The Bulls conclude the regular season with their final game at Georgetown on Sunday with an 11 a.m. start time. Tomorrow afternoon will conclude all the BIG EAST games and the eight spots for the tournament will be named.
