TAMPA - The University of South Florida women's basketball team got off to a fast start, however could not sustain its lead as Marquette ended up handing the Bulls a heartbreaking 61-55 loss at the Sun Dome Sunday afternoon.

USF (9-10, 0-5 BIG EAST) jumped out of the gate quickly taking its biggest lead of the game, 12 points, when Sasha Bernard connected on the front end of a two shot free throw to make the score 20-8 with 11:29 left in the first half.

The Golden Eagles (15-3, 3-2 BIG EAST) would close the gap using an 8-0 run, spearheaded by four points from Jasmine Collins, cutting the lead to four points, 20-16 on two free throws by Angel Robinson with 8:37 remaining in the first stanza.

The Bulls however would stop the run and get the lead back up to double figures before taking a seven-point, 34-27 advantage intro the locker room at the break.

USF came out in the second half and maintained its lead getting the margin to nine points, 40-31, on a layup by Leondra Doomes-Stephens with 15:41 left in the game.

Doomes-Stephens' layup would be USF's last for nearly six minutes as Marquette used an 11-0 run to take its first lead, 42-40, since leading 1-0 just over a minute into the contest, when Robinson drove down the middle of the lane for a layup on the left side with 9:52 left.

The Bulls would tie the game up three more times and take the lead three times - with the last coming on an Andrea Smith jumper with 3:12 left in the game making the score 53-51.

USF would get one last opportunity to get back into the game trailing by three; however after a missed Smith trey and a Porche Grant foul with 33 seconds left, Tatiyiana McMorris would ice the game with a deep three-point shot with 30 seconds on the clock.

On the afternoon, the Bulls would shoot 34.8 percent (24-69) from the field and controlled the paint outscoring the Golden Eagles in the lane, 34-24.
