|
TAMPA - The University of South Florida women's basketball team got off to a fast start, however could not sustain its lead as Marquette ended up handing the Bulls a heartbreaking 61-55 loss at the Sun Dome Sunday afternoon.
USF (9-10, 0-5 BIG EAST) jumped out of the gate quickly taking its biggest lead of the game, 12 points, when Sasha Bernard connected on the front end of a two shot free throw to make the score 20-8 with 11:29 left in the first half.
The Golden Eagles (15-3, 3-2 BIG EAST) would close the gap using an 8-0 run, spearheaded by four points from Jasmine Collins, cutting the lead to four points, 20-16 on two free throws by Angel Robinson with 8:37 remaining in the first stanza.
The Bulls however would stop the run and get the lead back up to double figures before taking a seven-point, 34-27 advantage intro the locker room at the break.
USF came out in the second half and maintained its lead getting the margin to nine points, 40-31, on a layup by Leondra Doomes-Stephens with 15:41 left in the game.
Doomes-Stephens' layup would be USF's last for nearly six minutes as Marquette used an 11-0 run to take its first lead, 42-40, since leading 1-0 just over a minute into the contest, when Robinson drove down the middle of the lane for a layup on the left side with 9:52 left.
The Bulls would tie the game up three more times and take the lead three times - with the last coming on an Andrea Smith jumper with 3:12 left in the game making the score 53-51.
USF would get one last opportunity to get back into the game trailing by three; however after a missed Smith trey and a Porche Grant foul with 33 seconds left, Tatiyiana McMorris would ice the game with a deep three-point shot with 30 seconds on the clock.
On the afternoon, the Bulls would shoot 34.8 percent (24-69) from the field and controlled the paint outscoring the Golden Eagles in the lane, 34-24.
The difference in the contest, however, would be Marquette's 85.7 percent (18-21) from the field as opposed to USF's 55.6 percent clip (5-9) from the charity stripe.
Smith would finish the day with a game-high 17 points while Doomes-Stephens added 13 points in the loss.
Grant grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and had a career-best five blocked shots.
The Bulls will now get a week to prepare for their game at West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. USF will return home to the Sun Dome on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. to butt heads with Seton Hall.
