CLEARWATER, Fla. - The University of South Florida opened the 2011 season with an 8-5 win over Marshall in the opening game of the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament.

After falling behind 1-0 on a solo home run by the first batter of the game, USF's offense was able to explode for eight runs on eight hits behind some stellar play from a couple of freshmen.

Sara Nevins made her impressive USF debut in relief of starter Lindsey Richardson, pitching the final three innings allowing only one run on three hits.

Richardson allowed three runs, two earned on five hits through four innings in the start.

Freshman Kourtney Salvarola ended the game with three RBI and two hits in three at-bats in her career debut with the Bulls.

Janine Richardson also added a pair of RBI, while Gina Kafalas added one and scored three runs at the top of the order for the Bulls.

The Bulls fell behind early on a solo home run by Herd leadoff hitter Amanda Lara, but the Bulls tied it up in the bottom half on an RBI double by freshman Kourtney Salvarola.

Sophomore Lindsey Richardson pitched the first four innings giving up only three runs and five hits.

Marshall gained a 3-1 lead through the first four innings, giving but it was not enough as the Bulls would bounce back.  USF started their half of the fourth inning trailing by two, 3-1, with 2 outs until Laura Fountain's single was followed by three walks to load up the bases and cut the Herd lead to just one. With bases loaded, Salvarola doubled in a pair to give USF their first lead of the game. Junior outfielder Janine Richardson another with an RBI single to extend the USF lead to 6-3.

The Bulls tacked on two more runs in the sixth after a scoreless fifth inning by both teams.   Junior outfielder Gina Kafalas scored on a Janine Richardson double, followed by freshman first baseman Stephanie Medina's RBI triple that made the score 8-3.

With an 8-3 Bulls' lead going into the 7th, the Herd didn't go quietly.  Marshall's Taylor Winton homered in the final inning, Sara Nevins closed out the game, giving the Bulls their first win of 2011, 8-4.
