CLEARWATER, Fla. - The University of South Florida softball team picked up their first loss of the 2011 season, falling to No. 6 Florida 12-0 in five innings Sunday.

The loss was the first of the 2011 season for the Bulls, dropping them to 4-1 on the year, and was the first time that USF failed to score a run.

Lindsey Richardson got the start against the Gators and pitched 2.0 inning and allowed seven runs, only two of which were earned.

Richardson dueled against Florida ace Stephanie Brombacker, who pitched a perfect game in 2009 against the Bulls, and threw another one on Saturday against N.C. State.

The Bulls fared better offensively against Brombecker this time around, collecting four hits including a pair from leadoff hitter Gina Kafalas, who went 2-3 on the day.

Stormi Grzybeck and Ashli Goff collected the other two hits for the Bulls in the loss.

The high-powered Gators offense didn't wait long to get the bats going against the Bulls. After Richardson struck out the leadoff hitter, the Gators got a deep home run to left-center by Aja Paculba for the early 1-0 lead. The Gators added another pair after a sacrifice fly and an error by Alexis Nowell at second.

Salvarola earned a walk in the bottom half of the inning, but the Bulls were unable to capitalize.

The Gators piled it on in the second; extending their lead to 7-0 after a pair of USF errors allowed four runs to come across for Florida.

Grzybeck singled with one out in the Bulls' half of the second, but was stranded at first to leave USF scoreless.

Capri Catalano relieved Richardson to begin the third, and allowed only a single, holding Florida scoreless for the first frame in the game.

USF got their second hit of the game on a single by Kafalas on a slow-roller to second, and stole second, but was unable to score after a strikeout by Salvarola and a deep flyout to left-center by Janine Richardson.

The Gators added to their lead in the fourth on a triple by Kelsey Bruder where the throw to third caromed into the USF dugout scoring two. UF brought in another on an RBI single to center, making it 10-0 before Sara Nevins came in to close out the side, but not before the Gators took the 10-0 lead.

USF went in order in the fourth, and the Gators added another two runs on a round-tripper to right off the bat of Bruder.

The Bulls were not able to squeeze any runs across in the bottom of the fifth, despite a pair of hits from Goff and Kafalas, and the game ended due to run rule, 12-0.

USF will play host to the USF Tournament next weekend in Clearwater.
