The University of South Florida women's tennis team suffered a second tough loss in as many days on Saturday with a 4-3 loss to No. 28 Arizona State in Austin, Texas. The Bulls drop to 2-7 on the season with the setback and are still seeking a signature road win after playing eight ranked opponents away from Tampa, Fla.
“This was another heartbreaker for us,” USF head coach Agustin Moreno said. “It was our second match in two days to come down to the last point. The girls are playing hard and competing. We're up against tough competition and we can't get things to go our way.”
The No. 47 Bulls got their points from the middle of the singles lineup on Saturday as Janette Bejikova, Loreto Alonso Martinez and
Alessandra Bonte each earned a win. Bejikova, ranked No. 62 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, grabbed her sixth victory of the season with a 7-5, 6-1 win over No. 82 Micaela Hein at No. 3. Martinez defeated Hannah James, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, and Bonte won a three-set match over Ashlee Brown 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 in the fifth spot.
No. 52 Irene Rehberger's match was the source of the heartbreak for the Bulls. USF's top player fell 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the last and decisive match to No. 17 Kelcy McKenna. No. 124 Ecaterina Vasenina earlier dropped her match to No. 44 Jacqueline Cako, 6-2, 6-0, and
Kate Parker continued to struggle in a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Sianna Simmons at No. 6.
In doubles play, the Sun Devils took the first two matches, leaving the No. 2 match featuring Martinez and Vasenina unfinished. Rehberger and Bejikova fell 8-6 to Cako and Hein at No. 1, and Parker and Bonte dropped their match with James and McKenna, 8-5.
The Bulls finally get an extended stay in Tampa beginning March 6 when Florida State visits the USF Varsity Courts. That match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. ET.
