CLEARWATER - The University of South Florida softball team fell to the No. 1 ranked Florida Gators 10-2 on Sunday afternoon to finish the USF Under Armour Showcase with a 2-3 record.
After a pair of wins over Green Bay and Central Michigan on Saturday, the Bulls could not get past the top-ranked Gators in the tournament finale.
Freshman Ashli Goff led the way for USF offensively, as the Bulls scattered seven hits as a team, their highest hit total against the Gators in the past three years. Goff reached base three times going 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
Senior Kelly McCarver collected a pair of hits in the loss, reaching base three times as well and scored one of the Bulls' two runs.
USF narrowly missed closing the gap against the top team in the nation, but hard-hit balls could not find the gaps or holes in the infield.
In the circle, the Bulls used four different pitchers starting with Lindsey Richardson who went the first 2.0 innings allowing two hits and three runs, two of which came on a home run in the second.
After Richardson was Capri Catalano, who struggled, before giving way to Brittany Bowles and Sara Nevins.
After a scoreless first, Florida used a two-run home run as part of a three-run second before adding five in the third to bust the game open.
The Gators added another run in the fourth to make it 9-0 threatening to run-rule the Bulls.
USF, with their backs against the wall, scored a pair of runs to keep the game alive. Stephanie Medina and McCarver walked sandwiched by an Erin Bly strikeout to begin the bottom of the fourth, but Medina was thrown out at the plate on a single by Alexis Nowell. Courtney Goff pinch-hit and drove in the first run of the game for the Bulls on a single to short.
Moments later, Nowell and Goff executed a double-steal bringing Nowell home and cut the Gator lead to 9-2.
The two teams remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when Florida was able to manufacture a run. USF got a runner to third with the chance to extend the game yet again, but could not get the timely hit as Florida took the game 10-2 in six innings.
The Bulls will be off until Friday when they play host to the final tournament of the regular season with the USF The Game Tournament, before beginning BIG EAST play the following week.
