Bulls Close Regular Season with 7-0 Win over UNF

The University of South Florida women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a 7-0 win over North Florida on Sunday at the USF Varsity Courts. The Bulls finish the campaign with an 9-10 overall mark and will next compete at the BIG EAST Championships.

The match was senior Irene Rehberger's last at the USF Varsity Courts. ITA's No. 35 player went out with a win, defeating Danielle Day, 6-0, 6-3 to finish the regular season with an 11-7 dual match mark playing exclusively in the No. 1 position.

“It was a good win for us on a hot day,” USF head coach Agustin Moreno said. “I think we felt a little bit tired physically, but we were sharp mentally. We finished the year with some wins and now we're ready for the BIG EAST Championships.”

Freshman Alessandra Bonte clinched the match for the Bulls with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Melinda Doak at No. 5. Bonte wraps her first regular season in Tampa with a 10-9 singles record.

No. 67 Janette Bejlkova was the first to earn a singles victory at No. 3, downing Melanie Aquirre, 6-0, 6-2 to run her singles record to 13-6. After Bonte clinched the match and Rehberger claimed her victory, Loreto Alonso Martinez grabbed a 6-1, 6-4 win over Simona Weymar at No. 4. Martinez concludes her regular season with an 11-8 record.

No. 114 Ecaterina Vasenina defeated Victoria Krook, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), to end the day's proceedings and run her record to 14-4 on the year.

The Bulls won at No. 6 by default because UNF only had five healthy players.

USF won the doubles point thanks to an 8-5 win at No. 2 from Rehberger and Vasenina over Krook and Weymar coupled with a forfeit at the No. 3 spot. The Bulls' No. 1 tandem of Bejlkova and Martinez also won their match 8-6 over Aquirre and Day.

The BIG EAST Championships are set for April 28-May 1 in South Bend, Ind.
