Richardson, Bulls Shutout Georgetown 1-0
April 09, 2011 | Softball
TAMPA- Lindsey Richardson kept Georgetown quiet offensively as the University of South Florida softball team extended their winning streak to eight games by knocking off the Hoyas 1-0 in game one of Saturday's double-header. Undefeated in the BIG EAST and leading the conference with five wins, the Bulls have started conference play with five consecutive wins, their best start in league games since they started 7-0 in 2008. Lindsey Richardson got the start in the circle and pitched magnificently as she went 6.0 innings allowing no runs on just three hits to tie her with Sara Nevins for most wins on the team with nine. Richardson has not allowed more than a run now in seven straight appearances and hasn't taken a loss since March 13 against Florida. Nevins came on in relief and, despite allowing the leadoff runner to reach and advance to third, held the Hoyas scoreless to earn her seventh save of the season tying a single-season program record. Richardson struck out the side in the top of the first and set the tone for a pitcher's duel. Neither team was able to score a run in the game and USF did not pick up their first hit until the fourth inning. Kourtney Salvarola reached first on an error to start the fourth inning. In the cleanup spot, Richardson's single to left advanced Salvarola into scoring position and Medina reached on the second error of the inning by Cara Savarese loading the bases for Laura Fountain. Fountain then drove in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly scoring Salvarola from third. Things were looking more favorable for a Bulls win as they are a perfect 21-0 with a lead after the fourth. That was all the offense that either team could produce but the USF pitching was terrific throughout to shutout the Hoyas and extend the winning streak. USF and Georgetown play game two of the double-header before finishing the three-game set Sunday at noon.
