The University of South Florida men's tennis team rebounded from a semifinal loss to shutout St. John's 4-0 on Sunday in the consolation round of the BIG EAST Championship held on the Notre Dame campus.
The Bulls wrap their schedule with a 15-8 overall record and await Tuesday's NCAA selection show to see if they have earned a bid to the national championship tournament.
Yannick Yoshizawa clinched the match for USF with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Gustav Kallen at No. 5. He was set up for the win by victories from Lucas Jovita and Federico Sabogal. Jovita was first off the courts with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stefan Bojic at No. 1, and he was followed off by Sabogal after a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mischa Koran at No. 4.
Jovita finished his final BIG EAST tournament with a perfect 3-0 singles record and lost only six games in those three matches.
Wael Kilani, Romain Deridder and Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard were in either second or third sets when their contests were stopped because the team match had been decided.
Earlier in doubles play, the USF pairings of Yoshiza and Sebastian Hagn alongside Kilani and Sabogal earned victories to secure the point. Kilani and Sabogal downed Bojic and Mike Lampa 9-7 at No. 2 to clinch the point after Yoshizawa and Hagn beat Matty Najfield and Koran, 8-3, at No. 3. Jovita and Jamal Adderley were in a tight 8-7 contest at No. 1 when play was stopped.
