OKLAHOMA CITY - University of South Florida head softball coach Ken Eriksen led the U.S. National Team to a 6-4 victory over Japan on Monday night to win the World Cup of Softball VI. The U.S. went 5-1 in the tournament to claim their fifth straight World Cup of Softball title.
In tonight's game against Japan, Taylor Hoagland hit a two-run home run, Valerie Arioto and Megan Langenfeld had RBI singles and Jordan Taylor retired the first eight batters she faced. Taylor carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, never letting the Americans fall behind after they grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The U.S. got even for a 7-0 loss in the championship game of the Canada Cup earlier this month.
The U.S. women opened the tournament with a 7-2 victory over the Czech Republic. They followed that by defeating Australia, 5-2. After a 4-3 loss to Canada, the U.S. got back on the right track with an 8-4 victory over Japan. The U.S. exploded against Great Britain, scoring 10 runs in the fourth inning to end that game early. The victory over Great Britain secured the Americans' place in the championship game against Japan.
