PROVIDENCE - The Bulls added to their program record season in Big East play by completing a season sweep of Providence with a huge second half run on Saturday afternoon.
USF improved to 8-4 in conference play after rallying past the Friars by outscoring them, 14-2, in the final four minutes to secure a 55-48 victory at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Rhode Island. The Bulls defeated the Friars, 81-78, Jan. 29 in Tampa and have now won three of their past four league games.
"I don't know how those guys feel, but I'm exhausted," USF head coach Stan Heath said with a laugh. "The guys did a fantastic job and there are a lot of heroes in that locker room."
Victor Rudd Jr. posted a team-high 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls, who held the Friars to a 30 percent field goal percentage. USF (15-10) has held its opponents to fewer than 70 points in 22 of 25 games this season and limited Providence star LaDonte Henton to just seven points after he scored a career-high 33 the last time out against the Bulls.
"We've put ourselves in a really good position," Heath said. "I think our defense is stellar and it gave us a chance to win tonight."
The Bulls' big run was fueled by Shaun Noriega, who scored six points in one minute of game action. Noriega has played in two of USF's past six games, but hit two 3-pointers, including the go-ahead shot with 1:46 to play.
"I looked at him on the bench and said, 'Shaun, we're going to need you,'" Heath said. "I said, 'Can you do it?' He said, 'Yeah, I got one coach.' He gave us two."
Jawanza Poland also gave USF a huge lift off the bench with nine points while free throws helped the team pull away at the end. The Bulls made 12 of 15 of their attempts from the line.
The Bulls will return home to the Tampa Bay Times Forum 7 p.m. Wednesday to host Villanova and look for another season sweep of an opponent. USF beat Villanova, 74-57, Jan. 5 in Philadelphia.
