Bulls Complete Sweep of In-State Rivals

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA - The USF women's team completed a sweet sweep Sunday afternoon at home.

The Bulls cruised past Florida Gulf Coast, 7-0, to secure a 3-0 week against in-state rivals. Head coach Agustin Moreno's squad started with a 5-0 win at UCF on Wednesday and edged Florida State, 4-3, Friday in Tallahassee.

"I knew it was a good challenge for us and I think we gained a lot of confidence, especially with our match against No. 22 Florida State," Moreno said. "It was hard coming up with a loss last week against Wake Forest, but everybody came through. We played really well."

USF sealed things up Sunday without top player Ecaterina Vasenina and Danielle Mills, who were both resting as the rest of the Bulls dominated in singles.

Loreto Alonso Martinez stepped into the No. 1 spot and handled Sarah Means, 6-1, 6-1. Alonso Martinez also won her doubles match with teammate Kate Parker, 8-3.

"She's played unbelievable this week," said Moreno of Alonso Martinez. "She really stepped up against UCF and followed through the whole week."

Parker got her first dual match of the spring in at the No. 6 singles spot and defeated Gyanna Mandic, 6-4, 6-2.

Lucie Rey and Fanny Fracassi posted an 8-5 doubles victory and each notched two-set singles wins to help the Bulls improve to 7-3 this spring.

USF heads to College Station, Texas to face Texas A&M on Friday before traveling to Houston to take on Rice on Sunday.

"We just need to keep doing the same things we've been working on lately," Moreno said.
