In a rare opportunity, the University of South Florida softball team squared off with the Netherlands national team Saturday night and falling shy, 8-1.
The Bulls worked in a chunk of their future, playing four freshmen, three sophomores and two juniors against the Dutch in the scrimmage.
Freshman pitcher Sam Greiner earned the start, pitching all seven innings, scattering 11 hits hits for three earned runs while striking out four.
USF scored in the first, sophomore shortstop Kourtney Salvarola driving home sophomore outfielder Courtney Goff from third. Goff and Salvarola's two combined hits in the first inning were the only USF would get, as the Netherlands' pitching staff slammed the door from there on out, winning 8-1.
