TAMPA -  It didn't take long for University of South Florida head softball coach Ken Eriksen to realize Sunday afternoon could be a special day. Seven innings and 21 batters later, his suspicions were confirmed.

Sophomore pitcher Sara Nevins breezed through the Toledo lineup without a flaw Sunday at USF Stadium, stymieing the Rockets, putting down all 21 batters with a good cutter and rise-ball for her first career perfect game.

"You could tell (Sara Nevins) had a little extra something on the ball today, and they weren't catching up," he said. "When she didn't have to throw a changeup to keep them off-balance, you knew she was throwing some rocks today."

Perfection was never in jeopardy, as Toledo never had a sharply-hit ball, and couldn't get the ball out of the infield all day. Nevins struck out 14, created three infield pop-ups, and coaxed four ground balls.

All of this came just 24 hours after the Pinellas Park southpaw tossed her first career no-hitter - a six-inning no-no against Central Connecticut Saturday. Nevins been on fire in her last 18 appearances, compiling a 0.21 ERA over 65.1 innings of work. Nevins has allowed just 33 hits in this stretch, and hasn't given up a hit in the last 16.1 innings she's pitched.

Nevins said she hasn't thought much about that streak. For these seven innings, there really wasn't much time to. The Bulls finished off the Rockets in just an hour and 32 minutes, during the Bulls' half of which, Nevins said she was pretty much left to herself.

"Coming off the field, I'd get a couple of "good job"'s, but other than that (the team) would go back to cheering for the offense," Nevins said. "No one really talked about what was happening."

USF's offense put up a pair of runs in the first two innings, scoring on singles from junior DP Kenshyra Jackson and senior second baseman Alexis Nowell. USF spread six hits among six different players.

The Bulls return to action Wednesday, hosting Canisius at the USF Softball Stadium on campus. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
